When it comes to the January transfer window in EA Sports FC 24 career mode, cheap signings are on the agenda, but who are the best for free?

EA Sports FC 24 is out on early access for Ultimate Edition and EA Play trial purchasers. As a result, players have been diving into career mode on Playstation and Xbox over the last week. As people get deeper into their first season, the prospect of making signings will become more and more apparent. In January, players with six months left on their contract can be signed for free. Who are the best 10 players to sign on a free contract?

1. Alex Meret (GK)

The Napoli goalkeeper starts at a rating of 83 at 26 years old. With a potential upwards of 85, he could be your number one for many successful seasons. On a free transfer, if you need a keeper, he is a great option.

2. Alban Lafont (GK)

A lower-rated starter than Meret, but a younger option nonetheless. Starting as a 78 overall, aged 24 there is plenty of room for the Frenchman to grow and become one of the best goalkeepers in the world a few seasons in.

3. Nico Elvedi (CB)

Turn of a defensive option, Elvedi starts out as a 77 overall but at 26, could easily go on to be over 80 in a season or two. Maybe not a forever starter, but as a squad option for seasons to come he could prove to be a clever signing.

4. Mario Hermoso (CB)

An older option, at 28 years old, but a very good one. An 82 rated to begin the game and doesn’t have that much potential. But on a free transfer for a team looking to improve, bringing him in on a free to play for two or three seasons, he is ideal.

5. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB)

Now for a full-back option. Wan-Bissaka isn’t a flying right-back but a top-class defender. He starts as an 80 rated, 25-year-old, but put him on some attack-minded development, he could become one of the best all-rounders in the game.

6. Youssouf Fofana (CM)

A France international at 24, Fofana will be one of the best central midfielders in the game, many seasons in. With a rating of 80 and the potential to surpass 84, he could be one of the star players in your team. On a free, this one is a no-brainer.

7. Adrien Rabiot (CM)

Another midfield option, another Frenchman. Rabiot has one of the best midfielder cards in the game to begin. He is 28, so isn’t likely to grow by much in the way of overall, but at 84 rating to start, you won’t mind. His wages are 150,000 so he won’t come cheap either.

8. Anthony Martial (ST)

One of the best young talents in the game many years ago, Martial is now 27 years old and has a rating of just 80. If you are in the market for a squad player who can fill a variety of forward roles, he could be your man.

9. Nico Williams (RW)

One of the better young players in the game, at 20 years old Williams comes in at a 79 overall rating. The potential of the Spaniard hits around 87 and as a result, will be a key man for years to come. On a free or cheap deal, this seems like another no-brainer.

10. Kylian Mbappe (ST)

Take this one with a pinch of salt but Mbappe is out of contract at the end of the 2023/24 season. The Frenchman is one of the best players in the game and would only move to an elite team. With wages well over 200,000, he is unlikely to be affordable to many teams.
