The hype train for Lords of the Fallen 2023 is slowly starting to build steam. There are only a few more weeks until its arrival, and the developer has teased that it is Dark Souls 4.5.

Fans of Soulsborne video games have been spoiled lately with the release of Lies of P. While Lies of P is a gothic fairytale heavily inspired by Bloodborne, Lords of the Fallen 2023 is said to be the Dark Souls that FromSoftware doesn’t plan to deliver. It has massive shoes to step into if it wants to fill the Dark Souls void left by FromSoftware, but early signs are very promising.

Lords of the Fallen 2023 is Dark Souls 4.5

Lords of the Fallen 2023 developers have said in an interview that their game is Dark Souls 4.5.

In an interview with Edge Magazine cited by GamesRadar, Saul Gascon, executive producer at developer Hexworks, said “Our strategy was that, yes, we will be Dark Souls 4.5.”.

Gason explained that Hexworks “want to be the second reference” after FromSoftware in the Soulsborne genre. As for how the game will be similar to Dark Souls, Gascon said it “will be that semi-open world that people crave, that more vertical-level design – because that’s what we want, too”.

According to the executive producer, “Every level branches out into other levels, like a T-shaped intersection”. Away from the semi-open world level design mentioned by Gascon, other similarities include the use of classes, the dark fantasy landscape, a similar hud, and, most importantly, the controller-breaking difficulty and massive boss fights.

Aside from Dark Souls, amazing one-hour gameplay for Lords of the Fallen 2023 has been heavily compared to Bloodborne. This is because it reportedly has a more horror aesthetic with faster gameplay.

Whether it’s closer to Dark Souls or Bloodborne, we absolutely cannot wait to play the first Unreal Engine 5 current-gen game. It comes to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on October 13th.
