Baldur’s Gate 3 has a massive fanbase thanks to its brilliance. However, not every gamer is a fan of turn-based combat, and this has resulted in a critic of the genre getting destroyed for their ‘hot take’.

There have been lots of good games released this year from Resident Evil 4 and Final Fantasy 16 to even Cyberpunk 2077 2.0. But, above everything, Baldur’s Gate 3 stands out as a massive contender for game of the year. It has amazing characters, the story is enthralling, decisions actually matter, and the gameplay is top-notch. Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to experience the stellar characters, writing, and role-playing mechanics because they are not a fan of turn-based combat.

Baldur’s Gate 3 critic destroyed online for ‘worst take ever’

Twitter user SynthPotato shared their ‘hot take’ for Baldur’s Gate 3.

The RockstarIntel author said Larian should take all of the profit from the game’s sales and make real-time combat an option. They said they’d be willing to get the option through paid DLC because a huge amount of players cannot get into the game due to turn-based combat.

What began as a mere ‘hot take’ quickly turned into a Twitter pile-on. Many users replied that it is a “horrible idea” with some comparing it to saying “Mario would be fun if it wasn’t a platformer”.

Others called it the ‘worst take ever,’ and more comparisons were made to other games with one fan parroting the hot take by saying Cyberpunk 2077 should add a turn-based option. Many simply said not every game exists for every audience, so something turn-based shouldn’t be changed to meet the whims of someone who likes real-time combat.

YouTuber Asmongold disagreed with the hot take, too. He said, “it’s okay to not like games and it’s okay for a game to not appeal to you”. He also added that “Baldur’s Gate 3 is successful because it knows what it is,” and he also warned that games changing fundamental features to appeal to the masses is always worrying because of what happened with World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King.

After all the responses, SynthPotato finally admitted they were wrong. They also acknowledged that they now know ‘turn-based games have a place in the industry’.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PlayStation and PC. It is coming to Xbox sometime this year.
