So, is there going to be COD BlackOut esports? This tweet from David Vonderhaar makes it look likely.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 isn’t even out yet, but it looks like Treyarch are planning some significant esports events. While we knew that Black Ops 4 multiplayer was always going to get a competitive scene, it seems like the Battle Royale mode will also!

In a tweet from Game Design Director, David Vonderhaar, it looks like MLG might just be running BlackOut events. The tweet mentioned MLG and was interested in doing a Showcase event with Vonderhaar as a co-commentator.

Interestingly though, he quickly deleted the tweet. Fortunately not before many had replied to it, including OpTic Pamaj. Austin Pamajewon screenshotted the tweet, as well as responding with this:

At least OpTic Pamaj was excited

So, what does this mean? Well, it looks like Treyarch are very keen on having a BlackOut competitive scene. With that being said, it is odd that Vonderhaar would delete the tweet, especially with his history of teasing and hyping.

It will be interesting to see if BlackOut could actually have a decent competitive scene. With Call of Duty in 12-month cycles, it could be that Black Ops 4 could die out or at least decrease in player base this time next year.

However, with games like Fortnite and PUBG going from strength to strength, could BlackOut keep going beyond the 12-month lifespan? We’re hoping so, and will get a first look at how BlackOut will play when the beta kicks off in September.
