Fortnite shotguns have been nerfed, once again!

Shotguns have stirred a massive debate in Fortnite ever since the game’s launch. For a long time, players have felt that they really affect the way the meta works, especially in the early game; if you get a shotgun at the start of the game, you are at a considerable advantage.

Another interesting problem for the developers has been that shotguns are taking up too many item slots, with players carrying at least two so they can ‘double pump’.

However, while the shotguns are incredibly popular, they have got their problems. For starters, they do seem to have some severe headshot issues, where they almost always do 200 damage. Furthermore, a big issue is that you can think you are hitting someone in the upper body or head, but the spread ends up not quite hitting the target.

For better or for worse, Epic has made some considerable changes to how shotguns are going to work, with immediate effect. On their latest patch notes, they wrote:

For a while we felt that Shotguns promoted good close quarter gameplay, however with the recent equip time changes, Shotguns are being used more often than we like. It’s something we’ve been keeping an eye on, but broadly speaking we feel Shotguns are a little too strong in their current state.

So what is new?

Pump Shotgun:

  • Headshot multiplier reduced from 2.5 to 2.0
  • Damage reduced from 90/95 to 80/85

Tactical Shotgun:

  • Headshot multiplier reduced from 2.5 to 2.0

What does it actually mean?

Well, shotguns have basically been nerfed, and not for the first time. We’ll be honest; the headshot multiplier is quite a good thing because the number of times a team-mate or I has been one shot killed by someone who got a lucky hit has been infuriatingly high.

Is it a good thing then?

For the most part, people would agree that it is. However, in recent weeks, we’ve noticed that shotguns lose out in close range battles to players with assault rifle; at times, shotguns now feel very disadvantages.

So we’ll have to play some more and get into a similar situation to know if the shotgun changes are for the better or not.
