Sheffield Wednesday have crashed out of the FIFA QuaranTeam tournament despite being installed as favourites beforehand.

The Owls set on seasoned FIFA pro, @DeleeFIFA to try and bring home the trophy for them.

But after cruising through the opening round of 128, Wednesday were seen off by FC Groningen in a game that ended 1-0 to the Dutch side.

It was a bitterly disappointing performance for the Sheffield Wednesday squad. A late goal being ruled out also added insult to injury as Groningen held firm in the end.

And @DeleeFIFA was bitterly disappointed to drop out following the game, although he showed grace in his defeat.

The result comes as a surprise to many after Wednesday were given the title of tournament favourites.

Their decision to bring in a professional FIFA player was seen as a smart move. However, it wasn’t to be for the Owls and their young gamer.

FIFA QuaranTeam bragging rights on offer in Sheffield

If you know anything about football you’ll know that Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are bitter rivals.

So with no football at the moment, the FIFA QuaranTeam tournament is a chance for both sides of the city to try and get one up on the other.

But with Wednesday now out of the competition, United have a chance to go further than them. Of course, given the Blades’ Premier League status and the Owls’ current struggles, it would be another string to the bow of the red and white half of the Steel City.

United take on Exeter City in their second-round tie. They cruised through the opening round 3-0 and face their lower league opposition tonight at 8:30 pm.

Will it be a similar story for United to that of Wednesday? Or can the Blades once again give themselves something to claim over the blue and white half of Sheffield?
