After an outstanding first stage in the inaugural season of the Overwatch League, London Spitfire have been crowned champions.
The only UK-based team took control of the stage 1 finals with brilliant wins over both Houston Outlaws and New York Excelsior.
In the process of beating NY Excelsior, the Spitfires managed to become the stage 1 champions following a stunning 3-2 victory which included them picking up a whopping $100,000 prize money.
London only just managed to make it into the playoffs, having a slightly better round record and round defence than 4th place Los Angeles Valiant and 5th place Seoul Dynasty who all finished on 14 points.
Ironically, the Outlaws had beaten London earlier this week to secure a second-place finish, but the Spitfires were able to secure some redemption where it really mattered.
And when it came to facing off against arguably the best team in the league – New York – who have the likes of Hye-sung “Libero” Kim and Jonh-yeol ‘Saebyeolbe’ Parkin their ranks.
NY actually took a commanding lead and it looked like London were going to be beaten.

However, in some proper British stiff upper lip and no-nonsense approach, London was able to mount an incredible comeback to secure the Stage 1 title and the huge money reward.
With just how well Stage 1 has gone for Overwatch and the huge numbers of viewers it has brought in on Twitch, we’re all excited to see how Stage 2 goes.
And that will be kicking off after a week break to allow transfers and new tactics for teams to put into place before it restarts on Feb 21st.
