American collegiate athletic conference, Mountain West, revealed earlier this week that it will sponsor a new eSports tournament that will run alongside its existing March basketball tournament.

The Mountain West Conference is currently made up of 11 universities from California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

The tournament, which is to be called the MW eSports Showdown, will take place entirely in Las Vegas where member school University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is situated.

Teams from member schools UNLV and Boise State University are set to go head to head and compete across Overwatch, League of Legends and Rocket League, all three of which are amongst the most popular eSports within the college community.

Running between 8th and 10th of March, the tournament marks the first time that an eSports competition will be held in direct conjunction with an existing traditional college sports tournament, and is considered to be a huge mile stone in terms of developing the eSports industry within the US college system.

With Twitch set to be the official broadcaster, the final day of eSports games will be played out at the Cox Pavillion in Vegas, the home court of UNLV’s women’s basketball team.
