The Atlanta Overwatch League Team has found an owner.

According to ESPN’s Jacob Wolf,  the Atlanta Overwatch League Team spot was purchased by Georgia conglomerate Cox Enterprises. It will be one of two United States expansion teams for Season 2 of the Overwatch League.

The Atlanta Overwatch League Team will be Cox Enterprises’ first investment in esports. It is also the first agreement signed for an Overwatch League expansion spot.

Cox Enterprises, founded in 1898, generated over $20 billion in revenue in 2017. It would have no problem covering the rumoured $30-60 million buy-in fee for an expansion team. By comparison, the inaugural Overwatch League spots sold for $20 million.

The Overwatch League is building for longevity, spending the past weekend concluding their inaugural Grand Finals at Barclays Center. Twitch viewership alone was above 300,000 on Day 1. Blizzard also made strides towards reaching new audiences with broadcasts via ESPN, Disney, and ABC.

The Atlanta Overwatch League Team is the first expansion team to finalize an agreement, but Wolf’s report also mentioned details on other potential expansions:

Two organizations, McCourt Global and Nenking Group, are finalizing negotiations to obtain regional rights to Paris and Guangzhou, China, sources told ESPN on Thursday.”

With London Spitfire taking home their trophy shortly after the Atlanta Overwatch League Team announcement, expect more updates regarding Season 2 of the Overwatch League in the weeks ahead.
