What are the best video game characters of all time?
Many great games don’t have a central character. I mean, who is the lead character in something like FIFA or Tetris? While those are fantastic titles, who doesn’t love a really great compelling character that you come to adore.
That being said, who is the best? Who is the greatest of all time? Well, this might be most of my opinion, and I’ll try to be impartial, but here are five of the best I reckon.
Ok, so God of War 4 wasn’t the most excellent game, and easily the worst in the franchise in spite of what everyone else says. I know I’m right. That being said, come on, Kratos is not only one of the best characters, but a legit badass. Tricked into killing his wife and daughter by Ares, this Spartan decides to take his rage out on most of Greece and their gods.
He’s brutally cold, almost inhuman, and someone that can destroy Zeus himself.
2. Gordon Freeman
The man that made nerds around the globe come together and feel like they can save the world. Oddly, for a character that has no dialogue what so ever, he has still managed to become so well respected.
Freeman is a gaming icon, someone that helped build everything Valve stands for, and he did it without saying a word.
For the love of god though, will Gabe Newell please make Half-Life 3?!
3. Guybrush Threepwood
Hey, speaking of geeks – Guybrush from The Secret Of Monkey Island! Razor sharp wit, completely bumbling, but has a bit of a nasty side which just makes me love him even more. By Tales of Monkey Island, he’s even wittier and now has a slightly nicer personality which makes him even more likeable.
Guybrush was always somewhat relateable; clever but lacking any common sense… that sounds familiar! He’s easily one of the most underrated, but still one of the best video game characters of all time.
4. Big Boss
Snake! Snake! SNAKE!!! The sneakiest SOB you could ever wish to come across in gaming. Now, I could have gone for Solid Snake, but for me, Big Boss, especially from MGS 3 is just a perfect character. Going from a rookie to having the torch passed over to him by the original boss in the best scene in gaming – FACT.
Sure, everyone knows Solid Snake, but for me, Big Boss aka Naked Snake is the man, and hey, Solid Snake is literally a clone from Big Boss!
Erm, duh?! Who else would be on this list? This little Italian plumber is basically the mascot for all of gaming, especially in the 80s and early 90s.
Again, a character that doesn’t really say anything other than in cutscenes or the occasional ‘yahoo!’. However, that hasn’t stopped him, has it? From being known as ‘Jumpman’ as a secondary character in the original Donkey Kong arcade to now being in over 200 titles.
Mario is a gaming god and one of the best, if not the best, video game characters of all time.
