Major League Soccer has announces the arrival of eMLS Cup.

The MLS has announced they will be forming an eSports FIFA league with EA Sports.

The eMLS Cup is set be launch in April, and will take place in Boston. 19 of the league’s football clubs will participate and must now go about selecting a player to represent them.

It is understood that each club will hold a qualifying tournament to select their player from each respective region.

EA Sports’ FIFA has been in eSports for some time now, with FIFA having been a part of the World Cyber Games since its debut season in 2000. However, as the eSports industry has grown, FIFA’s growth and popularity as a video game worldwide hasn’t gained the same traction in the eSports world.

It’s only recently that FIFA has  begun to really develop as an eSport, following the introduction of FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) Champions which debuted alongside FIFA 17 last year.

Last season England’s Spencer Ealing was crowned champion of the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) becoming officially the best FIFA player in the world.

As a result of his efforts, Ealing took home a prize of £145,000.

So where does the eMLS Cup play into all of this?

The newly formed eMLS Cup will now serve as a determinant for the USA and Canada’s qualifying candidates to the FIFA 18 Global Series Play-Offs. From here, a spot at the FIWC is up for grabs.

The MLS is not the first league to create its eSports equivalent. The likes of e-Ligue 1 and eVidisie are already in place in France and Holland, whilst English clubs Manchester City and West Ham are some of only a few English clubs to sign up to play.

Last year, West Ham’s Sean Allen made the FIWC final, losing 5-5 on aggregate due to away goals. This was a thrilling final, one that the traditional West Ham footballers would surely have loved to be a part of.

With more and more leagues and teams getting on board with FIFA as an eSport,  it’s exciting times for EA Sports. The sheer popularity of the game worldwide, away from eSports, is already staggering and it has every chance of growing to become one of the biggest eSports in the land.
