esports’ biggest streaming platform Twitch is now beginning to rival television broadcasters in terms of their viewership.

According to the Amazon owned streaming service has surpassed the likes of MSNBC and CNN in January, experiencing a 22% increase in terms of views from January 2017.

The figures

Last month, Twitch’s viewership stood at 962,000, significantly more than MSNBC’s which stood at 885,000 and CNN’s which was 783,000.

The fact that the streaming service is now rivalling major traditional television broadcasters is a massive statement by eSports in general, and is a clear indication of how things are rapidly progressing within the industry.

Twitch is still some way off the viewership of some of the USA’s biggest broadcasters such as Fox and ESPN.  However, they are clearly moving in the right direction, with figures only predicted to continue increasing throughout 2018 with the addition of a number of popular, high profile eSports leagues.

Twitter reacts as Facebook set to challenge Twitch as the dominant eSports streaming platform

2018 has seen the establishment of the Overwatch League, eMLS, NBA 2K Combine and many others, all of which have begun to draw their own flocks of viewers, the majority of whom opt for Twitch when it comes to their preferred streaming platform.

With January’s numbers proving to be a 26% improvement on December’s, there is no doubt that the platform will smash past the 1 million mark in the coming months.
