The Overwatch World Cup Bangkok Group Stage has come to a close.
The most recent stop in the 2018 OWWC was the most competitive yet. When the dust settled, Team Australia and Team China were left standing.
China and Australia are headed to the OWWC Finals. They will join Team South Korea, Team Finland, Team USA, and Team Canada. The remaining two teams will be determined at the final group stage in Paris.

China and Australia were joined in the group stage by Team Thailand, Team Denmark, Team Spain, and Team Sweden. The group came down to the wire, with four teams still in contention on the final day.
After losing to Australia in a day 2 upset, Sweden fell out of contention after dropping a map to Thailand. Things were wide open for Team Australia to qualify.
China went 5-0 in the group, taking the 1st seed. Australia only had to take a single map from them in its final match. The series ended up going to a game 5 tiebreaker; the winner would exit the group as the 1st seed. China prevailed, and Australia qualified as the 2nd seed.
In an interview with Red Bull, Captain Scott “Custa” Kennedy highlighted the significance of Team Australia’s success for the careers of his teammates.
“A lot of these [Aussie players] they’re trying to get in NA contenders, they’re trying to get into Overwatch League and beating these players is a very important step in that [journey],” Custa explained. “[Beating] Sweden 4-0, we put them in the ground and there’s a lot of eyes on [my teammates]. That’s the main thing we’re trying to accomplish here.”
The Overwatch World Cup Finals will take place at Blizzcon in Anaheim, CA.
